MATHILDE
A CHAMBER MUSICAL IN ONE ACT
Music & Lyrics by Conor Mitchell.
Book by Elizabeth John.
After De Maupassant's 'La Parure' ('The Necklace')

Commissioned by the London School of Music and Dramatic Art

Based on La Parure (The Necklace), Mathilde tells the story of a Nineteenth Century Parisienne who, believing she has been born into the wrong social class borrows a diamond necklace from her rich friend to attend a grand ball with her loveless husband. Containing one of literature's greatest twists this musical adaptation follows the rise and fall of Mathilde Loisel, Maupassant's most tragic creation. Mathilde was originally commissioned by the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in 2006. Its score draws on the work of the French Masters with its rich string and wind arrangement. This is an ensemble piece in every sense. The central character is surrounded by a chorus of nameless voices that tell her story through multi-play performance. There is no set. Only an open space. In this respect Mathilde is a perfect piece for a company with big ideas, theatricality and a lot of imagination.
