WOOD PAINTING/TRÄMÅLNING (1954)

A one-act play that became the basis of the script for THE SEVENTH SEAL. Set in the Middle Ages, it depicts the homecoming and encounters of a knight and his squire with a group of people who also appear in the film. There are none of the many scene changes that are in the film although the plot is still structured as a journey. Like the film the play is akin to a morality play.

In the play Death is the narrator rather than one of the characters. The squire's part is more pronounced while the knight's role is almost mute. Maria is explicitly cast as the Virgin Mary while the character, Jof does not appear in the play. The Witch has a more active role in the stage version.
